The recent UN Climate Summit had many powerful speeches, including the likes of President Barack Obama and actor Leonardo Dicaprio, among many other famous figures using their status to carry an important social message. However, this year's conference had one particular invitee who raised the audience with a very persuasive and articulate speech on the threat posed by climate change on her native country, the Marshall Islands.

Kathy Jetnil-Kijner was selected from more than 500 candidates to represent the voice of civil society during the UN Climate Summit in New York. Her words are striking and right to the point, as she says: "We've seen waves crashing into our homes [...] we look at our children and wonder how will they know themselves or their culture should we lose our islands".

She goes further by stating a poem written for her daughter, accusing the perpetuators of global warming and requesting them "taking responsibility for irreversible loss and damage caused by greenhouse effect gas emissions".

Her heart-wrecking poem ends with a clear warning: "They say you, your daughter and your granddaughter too will wander ruthless with only a passport to call home [...] We deserve to do more than just survive, we deserve to thrive."
