Élan Haïti: Youth Is Committed to Their Country and the World

A testimonial of the collaborative effort that brings hope and ideas for a nation full of challenges.

Youth is the future. Focusing on youth is a promising and visionary bet. That's the bet being undertaken by the group ECHO Haiti by launching Élan Haïti (Haiti's Momentum), the first international youth forum in Haïti, which took place from November 14 to 18 at the Campus Roi Henri Christophe University of State of Haiti. Lecturers, technical experts, academics, youth leaders and personalities were all present to make Élan a wave of ideas and hopes. Unity makes strength! Especially when it comes to the meeting of the best of the best: a dynamic, brilliant, competent, motivated and committed youth. Ou se fòs peyi a (You are your country's strength).

Élan Haïti

In a country torn by deeply rooted contradictions, it is still necessary to go beyond the theoretical statements and proposals in the air to convince rational skeptics. Élan Haïti was first concentrated to develop proposals for concrete and realistic projects. These four projects are organized around four major themes in Haïti and elsewhere: environment, entrepreneurship, education and international cooperation.

Élan Haïti

Joint projects between young people led to various debates and revived latent frustrations. Yet this proud and proactive youth quickly exceeded past dissatisfactions to start joint projects in which it has a major role to play. It was a wonderful picture to look at: an appropriation to take from the actions of Haitians. A true ownership - not that which is communicated to the utmost by transnational organizations that makes it lose its significance. Nor the concept of empowerment for which we hold a blind and superficial faith. No, a true ownership; promising and structured projects that are defined and built from scratch, and which will be exposed to the world within a year.

Élan Haïti

More than two weeks after Élan Haïti 2014, I can boldly say that the greatest achievement of the forum will not be these four projects, or the beauty of true ownership. No, the greatest success is summed up in the word "meeting". The forum Élan Haïti remains basically a place of exchange from which young people with similar ambitions rallied. Great minds think alike, don't they say? Each vision carrier has found, among the other participants of Élan Haïti, valuable resources that can help put out a multitude of projects for the benefit of Haitians, and especially for the citizens of the world we represent. Could Élan Haïti break several barriers in the nation and thus promote real development? Will this international meeting allow the Haitian youth to contribute to the redefinition of Haiti's relationships with the world?
